Cataract surgery is the most commonly performed surgery in the United States with over 1.5 million procedures done each year. A cataract is a clouding of the normally clear lens in the eye, causing hazy vision, unusual glare, poor night vision or a reduction in color perception. The LenSx® Femtosecond Laser is a new way of performing cataract surgery without a surgical blade. This custom, blade-free, laser assisted cataract removal option allows the surgeons at Gordon & Weiss Vision Institute to plan and perform cataract and lens exchange surgeries to exacting, individualized specifications unattainable with standard cataract surgery. The laser technology utilizes the same technology used in the LASIK procedure, and has been shown to not only reduce risks associated with traditional cataract surgery, but also to improve accuracy and efficiency of the procedure. In fact, recent studies show that some steps of the treatment were several times more accurate than standard techniques.

LenSx® Femtosecond Laser is the world’s first cataract surgery to utilize the same technology used in LASIK during some of the most important steps of lens exchange surgery. Gordon & Weiss Vision Institute is the first to offer laser refractive cataract surgery in San Diego. They are calling this new bladeless approach LRx or Laser Assisted Refractive Lens Exchange. Drs. Michael Gordon and Jack Weiss are pioneering the next phase of cataract and lens exchange surgical treatment. Once the clouded natural lens of the eye is removed, it is replaced with a clear, plastic intraocular lens (IOL). The procedures are performed in the comfort of their office based surgical suite.

Dr. Gordon says the practice’s long-standing commitment to innovation and experience with laser vision correction will prove to be a valuable asset to their San Diego patients. “We were one of the first practices in the US to believe laser-created LASIK flaps were best for the patient, which proved to be true. We now believe Laser Assisted Cataract Surgery will be better for patients and will become the way most cataract surgeries are performed. We feel our expertise in laser technology, makes us the perfect practice to bring this to San Diego.”

Drs. Gordon and Weiss have been involved in many new technology introductions and say they are excited to provide patients with a new standard in lens procedures. “It is the cataract surgery I would want for my friends, my family and myself,” says Dr. Weiss. “Having performed well over 10,000 successful cataract procedures, it is exciting to be able to introduce bladeless, laser-assisted cataract surgery. It should improve accuracy and allow patients who choose refractive cataract surgery to see even better without glasses after surgery.”

The LenSx® Femtosecond Laser uses light energy to perform corneal incisions and anterior capsulotomies (incision that allows access to the cataract-clouded lens). Everyone has a unique structure to the eye, and the laser is custom-guided to perform these steps with the most accurate and precise results possible for each individual. Using a state-of-the-art computer guidance system, our cataract surgeons can combine their experience and skills performing traditional cataract surgery or refractive lens exchange with the advanced LenSx® Femtosecond Laser technology to give exceptional results. The new blade-free laser refractive cataract surgery can also better manage astigmatism than traditional cataract surgery. The advent of newer and better IOLs has allowed cataract surgery to develop into laser refractive cataract surgery.

LRx Refractive Cataract Surgery
Cataract surgery has progressed from a procedure that removes the cloudy lens to a procedure that makes vision more functional by decreasing dependency on spectacles or contact lenses. This drastic improvement in the outcome of the procedure is due to the Blade-Free laser technique we call LRx and better lens implants. There are now many new lens options.

Toric (astigmatism correcting) Lens: The toric lens corrects for astigmatism and allows for improved vision for any patient with significant astigmatism.

Accommodative Lens: The Crystalens is an accommodative lens and is designed to help solve the problems of presbyopia. The lens is placed in the eye to give the best distance vision possible. When the patient looks at a near object the lens moves forward in the eye to focus on that object. When the patient looks off in the distance again the lens moves back to focus at the distance. This is a wonderful lens for distance and intermediate vision, such as computer. It also works fairly well at near for reading.

Multifocal Lenses: There are two great multifocal lenses, the ReStor and the Tecnis Multifocal. Both of these lenses have concentric rings on them that take the incoming light and split it between distance and near as a means of helping to correct presbyopia. This gives very good distance and reading vision. The best reading is with good lighting. The intermediate vision is good but not quite as sharp as the near and distance.

Blended Vision: This is another means of addressing presbyopia. It can be done with the toric lenses for patients with significant astigmatism. For those patients without significant astigmatism it is performed utilizing a very thin lens, allowing for some movement within the eye. The lens is put in the dominant eye for very sharp distance vision. The nondominant eye has the lens placed for intermediate distance. Due to the flexibility of this lens it allows for a blend of vision at all distances.

Dr. Michael Gordon and Dr. Jack Weiss, recommend the optimal choice for each patient. It is important to understand that the lenses are designed to give the best functionality with the least dependency on spectacles.

Weiss, M.D., Gordon & Weiss Vision Institute, will be the San Diego participants in this international, multi-center study.

This will be the first prospective study to follow these two popular methods of vision correction for nearsightedness, astigmatism, and farsightedness simultaneously.

Qualified candidates for the LASIK portion of the study must be above age 21, have naturally occurring nearsightedness, farsightedness and/or astigmatism and have had no prior eye surgery. To participate in the contact lens portion of the study, qualified candidates must meet the above criteria, and have worn contact lenses at least 5 years.

The goal of the study is to enroll both patients undergoing LASIK, and patients who will continue to wear contact lenses. The end point will be to determine if visual satisfaction, visual complaints and safety – as reported by participants – are similar or different between the two groups.

“We are extremely pleased to participate in this national LASIK and contact lens study,” said Michael Gordon, M.D. and Jack L. Weiss, M.D. who will serve as the Principal Investigators for Gordon & Weiss Vision Institute. “This pivotal landmark study has the potential to give timely and valuable information relative to these two widely used means of vision correction.”

Patient consents and surveys will be conducted over the internet using a HIPAA compliant web portal, that will automatically coordinate future patient surveys at the one, two and three-year anniversaries of the study date of entry.

Gordon & Weiss Vision Institute is enrolling patients in the study through June 30th, 2011. Qualified candidates in the study will receive compensation for their participation in and completion of the study.

For more information about the study, or to see if they qualify, candidates should call 1-800-NEW-VISION or register online at: http://www.contactslasikstudy.com/GordonWeiss

San Diego, CA – Ophthalmologists from around the world will be viewing for the first time a new film documenting the fifteen year process of investigating laser vision correction procedures leading to the approval of LASIK by the Department of Defense and ultimately NASA, at the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery Symposium in San Diego March 25-29. It’s a story that started in San Diego at the Navy Medical Center, with the Navy Seals in 1993. Local surgeons Michael Gordon, M. D. and Captain (Retired) Steven Schallhorn, M. D. of the U.S. Navy performed the first studies.

The film leads us through the initial testing, to approval of Photorefractive Keratectomy (PRK), Laser Assisted In-Situ Keratomileusis (LASIK) and advanced Custom LASIK. The city of San Diego is the backdrop to the sights and scenes of the program. In 1995 the Navy approved PRK for some military personnel, which led to the opportunity to investigate its use with aviators. Dr. Schallhorn, former Director and Program Manager for Navy Refractive Surgery, and himself a retired Navy F-14 Tomcat pilot and Top Gun instructor, was responsible for the major clinical trials conducted by the Navy and for the Department of Defense over a 15 year period.

In 1999, the major study for aviators began and other branches of the service became very interested. Under the guidance of Dr. Schallhorn and his San Diego-based team, all three branches of the service started the Department of Defense “Warfighter Refractive Surgery Program,” that led to the creation of numerous refractive surgery centers throughout the military, as well as a landmark program to treat Naval Academy Midshipmen prior to graduation. In 2004, based on the outcomes of Dr. Schallhorn’s research, the Navy approved PRK for aviators. Concurrently LASIK studies were being conducted with aviators and additional funding was approved to evaluate advanced technology, combining wave-front guided treatment with femtosecond lasers. In 2006, studies proved that modern technology, specifically wave-front guided femtosecond LASIK was clearly superior in terms of quality vision, such as improved night time driving performance. When LASIK results were presented to the Naval Aerospace Medicine Institute, they authorized an evaluation on aviators and the first patient was treated that year.

An evaluation of Custom LASIK in 100 military personnel showed that 95 percent achieved 20/20 or better uncorrected vision. These patients on average, were previously only able to read the first line (the big”E”) of the vision assessment chart.1. In a study of different methods to create the LASIK flap, 370 naval personnel underwent bilateral wavefront-guided LASIK with either the femtosecond laser or microkeratome blade. One week after surgery more than 76 percent of femtosecond laser patients achieved an uncorrected visual acuity of at least 20/16 (a full line better than 20/20) compared to 58 percent of microkeratome patients.

While characterized as an “elective” procedure by some, refractive surgery has profound, andeven life-saving, operational implications for service members in high risk warfare specialties. Navy S.E.A.L.S. and Explosive Ordinance Disposal personnel routinely report that PRK or LASIK has improved their chances of survival in training and in combat. In the aviator PRK study, 92% of pilots reported improved performance landing on the aircraft carrier, and 95% reported improved overall effectiveness as pilots after PRK. No pilot reported worse performance in any category. And in a separate study it was determined that over 90 percent of marksmen had improvement in marksmanship skills after laser vision correction; a significant result given the visual precision of marksmen.

Based on the results of studies conducted by the Navy, the U. S. Air Force approved LASIK for aviators in 2007, followed by NASA the same year. The NASA Medical Advisory Board recommended approval of LASIK as a “gatekeeper standard” that new recruits wanting to be astronauts could receive LASIK.

Through his work as Program Manager for Navy Refractive Surgery, and as a consultant to NASA, Dr. Schallhorn was responsible for the major breakthroughs in clinical trials conducted by the Navy and for the Department of Defense. “Astronauts and aviators routinely have problems with glasses and contacts”, Dr. Schallhorn says. “LASIK improves performance and ability to carry out the mission. For instance, it is not easy to instill an eye drop if there is no gravity.”

Dr. Schallhorn twice received the LEGION OF MERIT, the highest peacetime award given by the Department of the Navy for outstanding service, as a visionary leader in refractive surgery. In addition he received the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff award for Excellence in Military Medicine. He is also known as the inspiration for the Tom Cruise character (Pete Mitchell) in the movie Top Gun and served as a technical consultant during the creation of the script. He is now in private practice at Gordon & Weiss Vision Institute in San Diego and serves as the Global Medical Director for Optical Express, the largest provider of refractive surgery in the world. Michael Gordon, M.D. is founder of Gordon & Weiss Vision Institute. For over two decades, he has been involved in every aspect of the laser vision correction industry, as a surgeon, researcher and educator.

Dr. Gordon has performed thousands of procedures and is among the most experienced refractive surgeons in the world. He introduced Presbyopic Multi-Focal LASIK, (the first laser vision correction procedure to treat both near and distance vision) to the United States. Gordon & Weiss Vision Institute has been a trusted provider of eye care and eye surgery in the San Diego area for over 18 years. With highly-trained and skilled surgeons and the latest in surgical technology, Gordon & Weiss Vision Institute is committed to the highest in quality patient care.

LASIK and Cataract Surgeons at Gordon & Weiss Vision in San Diego, CA

At Gordon & Weiss Vision Institute in La Jolla, CA, ophthalmologists and LASIK eye surgeons are announcing the recent implementation of the latest laser technology available in the vision correction industry. Doctors at the Gordon & Weiss Vision Institute say that, for more than 25 years, they have been setting the standard for laser vision correction in San Diego, which is why they were compelled to provide the Wavelight optimized correction capabilities of the Allegretto FS200.

For over 25 years, the ophthalmologists and eye surgeons at Gordon & Weiss Vision Institute have been performing LASIK and laser vision correction procedures in San Diego, while remaining committed to pursuing the cutting-edge of laser technology. With the recent implementation of the Allegretto FS200, the surgeons say they are proud to continue this pursuit as it provides patients with the safest and most effective methods of vision correction.

The surgeons at Gordon & Weiss Vision Institute say laser refractive surgery such as Custom LASIK, PRK, or LASEK, has corrected the vision of over 6 million people, with an estimated 98% of conventional vision correction patients now seeing 20/20 or better. LASIK is a two-step procedure, first creating a flap and then treating the curvature of the eye with a laser to correct vision. According to the Gordon & Weiss Vision surgeons, flap creation with the new Allegretto FS200 allows for greater precision and accuracy. Lower energy levels, faster treatment time and greater customization, improves healing and results. The new femtosecond laser is the only system designed to fully integrate with the excimer laser to treat nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism. As technology allows the specialists at Gordon & Weiss Vision Institute to close in on perfection, they stress that while no refractive laser surgery can be guaranteed 100% of the time, the Allegretto FS200 brings them a little bit closer to perfect vision.

About the Gordon & Weiss Vision Institute

Dr. Michael Gordon is known as the first surgeon in the U. S. to perform laser vision correction for nearsightedness with the Summit excimer laser, as well as the first surgeon to correct astigmatism and hyperopia with the Emphasis Erodible Mask. As an experienced refractive and cataract surgeon, he works together with Dr. Weiss and Dr. Geffen, and recently welcomed his daughter, Dr. Alison Gordon into the practice. The doctors continue to lead the field in the pursuit of refractive laser surgery technology, and continually welcome LASIK surgeons from around the globe to learn more about their team that has successfully treated over 45,000 refractive patients.

Dr. Alison Gordon Helping San Diegans See Better

The San Diego County Medical Society Foundation estimates that 15.2% of San Diego’s three million residents do not have adequate health coverage. Project Access San Diego is a mutually beneficial partnership between physicians and their community that addresses those unmet healthcare needs. Dr. Alison Gordon, an Associate Physician and Surgeon at the Gordon & Weiss Vision Institute in La Jolla, CA, has been volunteering her time and expertise in ophthalmologic procedures, including refractive and cataract surgery in San Diego, to help restore the vision of a number of San Diegans.

The San Diego County Medical Society Foundation estimates that more than 462,000 San Diegans either go without insurance, or are underinsured. With the help of Project Access San Diego—a community program designed to help physicians address those healthcare needs—Dr. Alison Gordon is improving the overall quality of life for a number of San Diegans by providing a range of ophthalmologic procedures. She says she feels privileged to be given this unique opportunity with Project Access San Diego, and adds that getting to know the patients and participating in their care is a rewarding experience for her as a medical professional and a resident of San Diego.

The Gordon & Weiss Vision Institute is recognized worldwide for its expertise in a range of ophthalmologic procedures, including the treatment of a number of eye diseases and laser vision correction with implantable contact lenses and custom LASIK surgery. Dr. Gordon says the Project Access patients seen at the Gordon & Weiss Vision Institute often have advanced vision impairment due to cataracts, and would otherwise be unable to afford the care they need to restore their vision. “It is important to me, and the other physicians in the practice, to be able to use our skills and education to help those in need and reach out to the community.” She adds that the eye care specialists at Gordon & Weiss Vision typically see several Project Access patients a month, and are appreciative of the opportunity to help their fellow San Diegans.

The surgeons at the Gordon & Weiss Vision Institute are recognized as the first to perform LASIK surgery in San Diego. However, the most common reason Project Access San Diego patients are seen at the practice is to provide an evaluation for cataract surgery. Typically, Dr. Gordon says she finds that these patients have not had the opportunity to address moderate to severe visual impairment because of a lack of insurance coverage. She says they are always very gracious and appreciative of the opportunity created by the collaboration of the Gordon & Weiss Vision Institute and Project Access San Diego.

About Dr. Gordon

Dr. Alison Gordon earned her medical degree from Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York, and completed her ophthalmology residency at the California Pacific Medical Center in San Francisco. She is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and the American Medical Association. In addition to her participation in the Project Access San Diego program, Dr. Gordon also served as Chapter President of the Unite for Sight Organization in her third year of medical school.

The Gordon & Weiss Vision Institute is located at 8910 University Center Lane, Ste. 800, UTC – La Jolla, San Diego, CA 92122. The practice can be reached at (858) 455-6800, or found online at either http://www.gordonweissvision.com/ or the Gordon & Weiss Vision Institute Facebook page.
